FAILING FORWARD AGAIN: Stacy Phillips, OPTAVIA Health Coach

My muse this week is Stacy Phillips who is a certified OPTAVIA Health Coach and a nutritionist.

I have worked in the fitness industry my entire life.  I was raised in a bicycle shop where my father served the best of the best in the elite world of bicycling.  I have been a Personal Trainer, Yoga Teacher and Health Coach collectively for 35 years. It is safe to say I have observed human nature as it relates to health from multiple perspectives.  However, I have never known anyone more committed to their health and selflessly to the health of others than Stacy Phillips.

Stacy has a small frame – she is a peanut actually.  When I wrap by arms around her to hug her at a size 6, I cannot imagine her being a size 28 (no that is not a typo) but she has been that heavy on a few occasions in her life.  When I step on the scale – what blows my mind is that Stacy has lost my entire body weight not just once but, TWICE.   Yes, Stacy has lost 130-150 lbs TWICE. Today she is not only at a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) but she has run marathons, hiked very challenging mountains like Camels Hump; and helped a legion of us get, stay, and share health.

I have also witnessed her commitment to health from both ends of the spectrum. Stacy has been my OPTAVIA  health business coach since 2013 and she has also been a personal training client. She is not a natural athlete, she has to work at it very hard.  It is safe to say that we are on the health journey together on a very deep level both personally and professionally.

Recently, I invited Stacy to be part of Fearlessly Delivers new Fearless Alliance Health & Wellness Team. I could have chosen one of hundreds of people I know in the industry to serve on my company’s Health & Wellness Team.  Stacy is the official Fearlessly Deliver Health Coach for a very important reason: she has a commitment to helping others that only comes from having a profound health experience of her own. I believe only those who have really been “there” can help people to get “there.”

In all the years, I have worked with people as a health professional; what I know is that for many people real, lasting change is practically impossible. When I introduce my clients, associates, friends, family and partners to Stacy I know that they will be taken care of even better than I could take care of them. Stacy is not only a Villanova Certified Health Coach through OPTAVIA but she is also on the cusp of having her Masters in Nutrition. She is a smartie. Ask Stacy anything about nutrition and she can answer you with facts, figures and results of research studies. She is like a nutrition vault.  But more importantly, Stacy gets “it.” She has fallen off the horse and gotten back on in a very significant way. She KNOWS the obesity struggle because she has lived it and she has shared THAT story with the world in all areas of her life.

Check out Stacy’s OPTAVIA Profileto learn more about her.  Follow her on Facebook at @mycoachstacyand on Instagram at @stacymichellephillips. If you inquire with Stacy about Health Coaching use the code word “Fearless” and she will take extra fearless care of you and you will be added to all the Fearless Health & Wellness events and groups as well.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM STACY ABOUT BEING FEARLESS?

1. Model the Change You Want to See in the World

Stacy and her husband made a decision one day when confronting the kidney needs of their son Julian.  They asked his kidney doctor at the Mayo Clinic what they could do for their son who has had a kidney transplant.  The doctor told them that the best thing they could do for their son was to model good health.  This is Stacy and her husband David’s why. For Julian, if he does not model good health his life is immediately at risk.  It cannot get more real than that.

2. Get Comfortable with Personal Development

What I know of Stacy is that she is 120% focused on her own personal development because she knows that she cannot give away what she can does not have. What I did not know is that she had to convince herself to get comfortable with personal development. She has been so successful to incorporate personal development into her life that I thought it was natural. Check – mission accomplished!

3. Being Your Own Brand is not for Wimps

For those of us who are our own brand – meaning WE are the product; this idea of always being on the beam can be deafening.  Look at all the people in the news who are on top of their game when they end their lives, overdose, or meet some similarly tragic fate.  Getting up when you have fallen on your face in public when you are your own brand is REALLY not for wimps.  Stacy and I have both learned that the most important thing that we can do for our personal brand is to keep getting back up when we fall down and realize that in that action we are only strengthening our brand! If only we did not have to go through the pain of self doubt to really understand this phenomenon.  Yes, you can watch others do it but until you have fallen in shit and had to wash it off in public…you can’t really own this skill. If you are your own personal brand and you have not screwed up really badly in public yet; put on your seat belt. If you are lucky, it will happen and you will become truly fearless!

4. Connect Authentically

Stacey said something that really caught my attention when I asked her what she is concerned about today. She said “Fear does not concern me. It excites me!” #AttaGirl! She knows that once she gets a current and accurate view of her situation she can grow and walk through her fears.  She is super brave to admit that what does still rattle her is connecting authentically with people.  She admits that she is still her own biggest challenge. The only way we can show up authentically is to be honest that showing up sometimes is not natural and is something we have to always strive to get better at.  Stacy and I were kindred spirits instantaneously. Sometimes that is how connection goes. However, most of the time we have to really work at it. When we get the easy connections, we hang on to them and foster them with all our hearts.

5. Choose Your Own Adventure

Stacy shared a few things in relation to what she could tell others about being fearless. She agreed with many of the others I have interviewed, fearlessness is not the absence of fear it is going forward anyway in spite of fear. She also said that we have to continue on with steadfast consistency and not get stuck in analysis paralysis, and be okay with uncertainty.  Finally, what she said that stuck with me for this blog was – we have the right to choose our own adventure. We are worthy of that choice. We can show up every day and CHOOSE health over disease. We can CHOOSE to be engaged, entertained, happy, successful, loved, and all the good things in life.  Every day when we open our eyes, it is our choice how we choose to slay the day. Choose health. It is a super good idea!

Thank you so much Stacy for showing up the way you do in my life, for being the example of authentic health for so many, for house sitting and being Aunt Stacy to my kitties while I was with my Dad for our birthdays; and for taking the time out to be one of the Fearless 7!

STACY’S ILLUSTRATION’S STORY

I chose to gift Stacy two of the pieces that were part of in my 2016 Entrepreneurial Traits series that was featured in my studio for the Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour because Stacy is a prime example of how to Fail AND Pay It Forward.

The two pieces I chose are like a before and after pic.  The Fat Lady is always singing healthy BMI or not!

See the original Fearlessly Failing Forward Blog HERE.

I thought to change the pieces a bit and add color to their faces since I have used color in all the faces since these six pieces were created. However, I just could not bring myself to do that. I realized when I picked my brush up to fill the faces in that background, the face had meaning to me at the time that even I did not see. Those of you who have been following me know that I always start from a black background because it reminds me of the chalk board as a kid.  The background in this case symbolizes how our past is always part of our present on some level.  A blank chalk board is always full of possibility!
